Ithaca College is a private college located on the South Hill of Ithaca, which is a city in the US state of New York, situated on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake, with a population of nearly 30 000 inhabitants, as estimated during the 2004 census.
The college was established in 1892 and first started as the Ithaca Conservatory of Music. After it added to its curriculum the study of elocution, physical education, dance, speech correction, business, radio, and the liberal arts, in 1931, the conservatory was chartered as a private college. Today, Ithaca College offers its students more than 100 degree programs in its five schools, being particularly renowned for its communications program, for which it has gained international recognition.
Ithaca's athletic teams call themselves the Bombers and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are blue and gold.
Ithaca College is, perhaps, best know for its large list of alumni, who play or have played substantial roles in the world of broadcasting. But, broadcasting is not the only area in which the college's graduates have made themselves notable. Among Ithaca's famous graduates, there are also: Steven Van Slyke - chemist, 20 patents related to Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs), Kate Aldrich - internationally-renowned mezzo-soprano, David Guy Levy - film producer, August and Patriotville, USMC Major General Robert L. Wolf - Command of the New York Naval Militia, and Richard Jadick - combat surgeon, who was awarded the Bronze Star for service in Iraq.
